The steps to rename a device on your router.
Step No. 1 – Find your router login credentials
The first thing you need is any browser when you access the router. This is easy if you have direct access to the router otherwise you will find the router login details which are mostly labeled on the back of every router.
Something like this.
if you do not have direct access to your router, there is no worries about this, you can simply search on google to your model and login details. As you know most routers come with default specifications provided no one has changed them. If they are still changed then you will need to get the details from someone who knows the router to reset all the login password details to default or do a full factory reset.
As you know router login is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in most countries. It may vary though.
Step No. 2 – Access Your Router’s Web Interface
As you may have read before, to rename a device, you first need to access your router’s admin interface, This is usually done through a web browser on a device connected to your network.
Login into your router to use Ip admin/password. Most of the IP addresses we have are 192.168.1.1 0r 192.168.0.1 on the router. If you don’t know this, go to the back of your router, and it’s all available.
It will look something like this.
Enter the username and password “admin.” which are mostly identical and are used by default. If someone has changed the same login details, you need to do a full factory reset of your device.
Step No. 3 – Find The Devices List
Once you enter the router, you can see the name of the connected device list , which can be estimated from the mac and Ip address.
Something like this.
This section may be labeled differently depending on the brand and model of the router, but includes common terms such as Device List Connected devices Client list Connected devices.
As you can see in the picture above,In most routers, you can find the DHCP Clients section attached. Like a Tp-Link router. some routers shows connected devices in the attached devices section.
Step No. 4 – Identify the Device You Want to Rename
You’ll see in the device list all the devices that have recently connected to your network. These devices can be identified by their MAC address, IP address, or generic name provided by the device.
This is how you should identify devices. If you’re not sure which device it is, you’ll need to check your device’s MAC address (usually found in the device’s settings or hardware) and make sure it matches the list.
Rename the Device Name
Once you have identified the device, you select it and click the edit icon next to the device name, depending on your router’s interface.
Enter a new name on your device A text box should appear where you can enter a new name. Choose a descriptive name, such as “Mytel Laptop” or “Main Head Office.”.
You must save the changes After entering the new name, click the Save button to save the changes. The device should now appear in the list with the updated name.
How we identify connected devices (who they belong to)
Sometimes it happens that we don’t even know how to list connected devices, so that means we can only show anonymous looking devices like Mac Addres and generic names like Mytel12345 or unknown devices.
You can easily find each device’s MAC address on most devices somewhere in the menu, usually in the router menu settings.
